An Angel Out of Tune (audio CD) by Dr. Glenn Latham
This CD includes 24 easy-to-learn skills that will make your home and workplace more harmonious. Try these skills on "angels" of all ages: your teen, spouse, parent, in-laws, co-workers.
Dr Glenn Latham's wife, Louise Latham, shares this interesting insight.
"An Angel Out of Tune was the first product Glenn produced. It was inspired when our first baby had terrible colic and Glenn & I spent many hours walking the floor with her trying to comfort her. One night when it was Glenn's turn to be up with her, he found himself really tired, and getting annoyed because she wouldn't stop crying. Then he caught himself and realized she was really hurting and didn't have any other way to let us know. Glenn decided she was an "Angel just singing out of tune!" That thought helped him to become more calm and eventually she fell asleep.
Sometime later he decided that would be a good way to think about children who were crying and upset, especially babies. We are all distressed with the number of babies injured, and even killed, by distraught parents or caregivers. His intent was to help parents handle their frustrations with children of all ages, and hopefully decrease the anger and avoid things like shaken baby syndrome. It really works. One young mother in Florida had her children taken away because she was angry and physically abusing them. The therapist hadn't been able to get her to make the necessary changes and talked with Glenn. They decided to have her listen to this tape every morning and evening as she drove to and from work. She was able to change her behavior and was able to have her children returned to her. She spoke at a conference at ABA and said that listening to these tapes changed her life and she was so grateful. They are very good, and a easy way to absorb important principles."
The American Mothers chapters in several of the states use them as an introduction to their parenting classes, and use The Power of Positive Parenting as their lesson manual.
There is an introduction and ending that are musical pieces from Glenn/s song. Then there are 22 scenarios covered in the tape, each dealing with a situation where parents tend "to lose it" with their kids. The following are the scenario titles, most of which are pretty self explanatory.
