SpeechTeach:
Language Teaching System Based on Behavior Analytic Research
SpeechTeach helps students speak out loud.
SpeechTeach is the only software program that teaches students to speak out loud, rather than just to understand what he or she sees and hears. SpeechTeach was developed by a team of Ph.D.-level experts in language education, including included Dr. William Hutchison, Dr. Kenneth Stephens, Dr. William Potter, with consultation from Dr. Mark Sundberg and Dr. Janet Twyman, leading specialists in language teaching for developmentally delayed and autistic children and adults (see books by Dr. Sundberg in this section of the CCBS store). It was designed to teach spoken language in the most effective manner possible, combining images and video presentations of words that language-delayed students are likely to encounter every day.
SpeechTeach is for students at all levels of speech learning and articulation.
1. SpeechTeach is ideal for beginning speakers. When a beginning student has little or no speech, and pronunciation that is often not clear enough to be understood, human teaching is required. For these students, SpeechTeach runs in Teacher-Assisted mode to:
- provide you with outstanding sets of photos and videos
- manage the sequencing of teaching
- deliver motivating reinforcers
- keep records of progress
to make your teaching time as productive as possible. This first phase of speech teaching requires a teacher with great patience and persistence, but learning accelerates after this phase. SpeechTeach is always trying to recognize the student's words, so you will get automatically get feedback when the student's pronunciation has improved enough to use voice recognition!
2. SpeechTeach is ideal for early speakers. When a student's pronunciation is good enough to be understood but is still not quite correct, SpeechTeach's Special Needs Voice Recognition has a unique validation procedure to adjust to the student's pronunciation of many words. There will still be some words it cannot recognize, which you can teach using the Teacher-Assisted mode, even within the same session as Voice Recognition words. Or you can just postpone teaching those words until the student's pronunciation improves. SpeechTeach is always trying to recognize the student's words, so you will get automatically get feedback as the student's pronunciation improves!
3. SpeechTeach is ideal for intermediate speakers. When the student can pronounce many words correctly, SpeechTeach's voice recognition will recognize many words immediately without any adaptation. Most of the remaining words can be recognized through SpeechTeach's Special Needs validation procedure, and any remaining words can be taught in Teacher Assisted mode. Word Collection CDs extend the vocabulary SpeechTeach covers to over 1,000 words, useful for any student.
Does SpeechTeach work?
Yes, SpeechTeach works! Based on decades of research, SpeechTeach is the first of a family of language-teaching software programs that uses patented technology to improve language for children and adults. 7th Generation Technologies developed and thoroughly tested SpeechTeach with families, speech professionals, and educational institutions. The children who tested SpeechTeach had a range of disabilities from language-delays, autism, and developmental-delays to Downs Syndrome. Now with hundreds of users, SpeechTeach has proven to be effective and popular with students, teachers, and parents.
