Applied Behavior Analysis for Autism
An article by Gina Green. Excerpt: Recent years have seen a surge of interest in applied behavior analysis (ABA) in the treatment of autism. Scores of programs and practitioners claiming to "do ABA" have popped up, some seemingly overnight. Many stories about ABA for autism have appeared in the electronic and print media, and various task forces and committees have undertaken to evaluate published research on ABA and other approaches to autism treatment. Yet misconceptions about ABA – including some that have been around for years – persist, and many treatment programs that claim to be "doing ABA" really are not. How can families, professionals, and funding agencies differentiate genuine ABA programs and practitioners from posers? It is difficult to paint a picture of genuine ABA treatment for autism in words, especially in a limited space, but this article attempts to describe some of its key features.

Consumer Guidelines for Identifying, Selecting, and Evaluating Behavior Analysts Working with Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders
The Autism Special Interest Group (SIG) of the Association for Behavior Analysis International asserts that all children and adults with autism spectrum disorders have the right to effective education and treatment based on the best available scientific evidence. Unfortunately, many interventions for autism have not been shown to be effective in sound research; others have been shown to be ineffective or harmful. 1 Research has long documented the effectiveness of applied behavior analysis (ABA) methods in the education and treatment of people with autism. 2 Although it is beyond the scope of these guidelines, the autism SIG urges consumers to inquire about scientific support for all autism treatments.

Six Principles of Effective Early Intervention
Jay Birnbrauer writes about Excellent found in an article by Craig Ramey and Sharon Landesman Ramey. (Reference: Ramey, C. T. and Landesman Ramey, S. (1998). Early intervention and early experience. American Psychologist, 53, 109-120.) These authors were not writing in support of applied behavior analysis or any other approach. They are highly respected investigators of early intervention. These are the results of their extensive research and literature review.

Applied Behavior Analysis and us: One parent's reflections on partnership and persuasion
Transcription of an address delivered at the 1999 Annual Board Meeting of the Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies. The address was delivered by a parent of two children diagnosed with autism. Her address was intended to reinforce the valuable work performed by behavior analysts and to suggest improvements in transmission of behavior analytic work to the general public.

Autism at school: seven questions for parents by Richard Hastings, PhD
Many children with autism find aspects of everyday life difficult, and school is no exception. School is a complex environment at the best of times, but even more so if you struggle with social situations, understanding other people, demands to perform academic tasks, constant changes to routines, and noise, crowding, and other sensory issues. At school children with autism can develop academic and social skills, if they get the right support.
